Goodnight Stories for Rebel Girls
I was asked to illustrate two portraits of inspirational women for the book Goodnight Stories for Rebel Girls. This is Millo Castro Zaldarriaga, b. 1922, the Cuban drummer who dared to drum when it was taboo for a girl to do so. She joined Cuba’s first ever all-girl dance band at the age of 10 and went on to become a world famous musician.
And the extraordinary Cholita Climbers of Bolivia. These women, wearing their tradition ‘cholita’ skirts, have scaled five peaks in Bolivia’s Cordillera Real range. All are higher than 6,000 meters above sea level.
